Tirzepatide (the main ingredient in Mounjaro) is quickly overtaking semaglutide (the main ingredient in Ozempic) as the weight-loss injectable of choice. It is the first dual-targeted treatment for weight loss and diabetes, a peptide that activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors that stimulate insulin secretion. The injection works by helping the pancreas release the right amount of insulin when blood sugar levels are high, such as when we eat those comforting carbs we love so much.

Tirzepatide slows gastric emptying which allows food to stay in the stomach longer, allowing you to feel fuller for longer, reducing your appetite. This is helpful for controlling over-eating and generally contributes to fewer daily and weekly calorie consumption without the feelings of restriction and deprivation that make weight loss by changing diet alone so challenging for millions.

Why is tirzepatide gaining in popularity? Tirzepatide is popular because it appears to produce greater weight loss by stimulating two satiety hormone receptors instead of one. Although it has not yet been FDA-approved specifically for obesity, tirzepatide demonstrated significant weight reduction when analyzed as the secondary outcome in SURPASS trials and as the primary outcome in the SURMOUNT I trial. There is no direct comparison analysis between tirzepatide and semaglutide at doses approved for weight loss, however inferences of tirzepatide’s superior efficacy can be drawn from the side-by-side comparisons of similarly designed trials,

As with any injectable, side effects can occur. TBTW patients seem to have side effects less frequently with tirzepatide because we start with a low dose and titrate up. Nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and heartburn are the most commonly reported side effects, but they usually subside within the first month. Your TBTW provider can make adjustments for you, to help reduce or eliminate any negative side effects.

Is this injection a substitute for healthy eating and exercise? Absolutely not! Patients who aim to eat protein-forward meals and reduce or eliminate inflammatory foods and alcohol do better than those who do not. Likewise for exercise: weight loss injectables are not an excuse to ditch the gym! It is better to think of weight loss injectables as a tool in your toolbox for weight loss and weight maintenance. It does happen to be a very easy and effective tool! If you’ve been wondering if tirzepatide might be the tool that finally helps you lose or maintain your weight long term, let this be the year you meet your weight goals!
